These wall hangings are made from clay dug from my garden in spring 2026. Highland Park yards as well as many other neighborhoods in Southside Chattanooga, TN have been identified as having high lead content in the soil. “Before the dangers of lead were known, waste materials with lead from old metal foundries were used as fill material in yards” My yard has not undergone the unearthing of the soil to replace it with non lead ridden topsoil, leaving me planting pollinator gardens and not using the clay gathered from my yard for vessels that would be touched often or used for food consumption.

I am unsure at this time how to test for the safety of the lead quantities in my yard clay, so making objects that can be seen but not necessarily used feels like the most appropriate use of the materials around me.
